Zapped...into slowing down, July 9, 2014

Can you imagine living in a time without all the modern conveniences?  It is hard to live, in our present world, 24 hours without power.  I would say we are a bit spoiled.

Last night, I was reminded that sometimes we need to slow down in life, turn the TV and computers off and spend time with our families.  We get so caught up in social media that we forget what it is like to carry on a conversation with our spouse, or at least I do.   It is amazing what you can find out when you are forced to sit down, relax and simply carry on a conversation due to a power outage.

Our electricity went off during a thunderstorm last evening at 6:00 p.m. and came back on today at 11:00 a.m.  We opened our doors, dealt with the heat, lit oil lamps and sat here and talked until about 10:15 p.m.  Not only did our electric go off, but we had no connection to Facebook or the internet via a computer or phone.  Phone calls and texts were the only things that worked.

Maybe this was just God's way of telling me it was time to have that time with my husband.  Entergy showed that we were the only house in our immediate area without electricity. I looked around us and all the neighbor's lights were burning bright.

I was thinking it would probably be too unbearable to sleep, but by the end of the night,

I was pulling covers.  I awoke to a very nice cool morning.  I got up expecting to have a cold shower, but much to my surprise, we still had hot water.  I  showered, got dressed and went out on the front porch to put my make up on and just sat there for awhile, soaking in the beautiful morning, the birds singing and the noise of the country as it came to life.

I've decided, I am blessed.  Blessed to have electricity and all the comforts and luxuries it provides. Blessed that I had a little reminder to slow down in life and to take the time to focus on the person in my life that is second to God, my spouse.  Simply blessed!

Sometimes it takes a little "zap" to get your attention and God knows just how to do it. It's the people and the little things in life that matter.
